Basic Waltz technique includes smooth footwork, with a swaying motion and rise & fall on side steps. The rhythm is usually a straight-count: one step (let's call it a quick step) on each beat of music: 1-2-3-4-5-6.
The Progressive Pattern: (Six steps) The rhythm is six quicks.
o The leader begins with the left foot and steps forward, side (right), together, forward, side (left), together.o The follower begins with the right foot and steps back, side (left), together, back, side (right), together.
The Progressive with Quick Underarm Turn Pattern: (Six steps) The rhythm is six quick steps.
o The leader begins with the left foot and steps forward, side (right), together, forward [raising left arm], forward, forward [and lowers arm].o The follower begins with the right foot and steps back, side (left), together, back, [turns 1/2 to right] forward, [turns 1/2 to right] back.
The Box Pattern: (Six steps) The rhythm is six quick steps.
o The leader begins with the left foot and steps forward, side (right), together, back, side (left), together.o The follower begins with the right foot and steps back, side (left), together, forward, side (right), together.
The Box with Slow Underarm Turn Pattern: (Twelve steps) The rhythm is twelve quick steps.
o The leader begins with the left foot and steps forward, side (right), together, back [raising left arm], side (left), together, forward, side (right), together, back [lowers arm], side (left), together.o The follower begins with the right foot and steps back, side (left), together, forward, side [turning 1/4 right], forward [circling], forward, forward, forward, forward [into leader], side(right), together.
The Trouble Step (or Hesitation, or Balance) Pattern: (Two steps) The rhythm is quick, hold, hold, quick, hold, hold
o The leader begins with the left foot and steps forward, holds for two counts, back, and holds for two counts.o The follower begins with the right foot and steps back, holds for two counts, forward, and holds for two counts.
The Trouble Step with Turn Pattern: (Four steps) The rhythm is quick, hold, hold, quick, quick, quick
o The leader begins with the left foot and steps forward, holds for two counts, back (turning head to the new direction), side (rotating shoulders left to the new direction), and together.o The follower begins with the right foot and steps back, holds for two counts, forward, side (staying with leaders shoulders as they rotate left), and together.
